Cushamen Cattle Aborigin Colony

(We apologize, this page is under construction)

In route to the village of Cushamen, on the #4 Provincial route and at 40Km (25mi) of El Maitén we can find the Cushamen Cattle Aborigin Colony, one of the two near aboriginal reservations to El Maitén

Formed by approximately 50 families of mapuche/tehuelche origin, their inhabitants live essentially off the breeding of calf cattle, the cultivation of their lands and the elaboration of crafts following the ancestral customs of their ancestors.

Every year the inhabitants celebrates the "Camaruco" or "Nguillatún", traditional prayer to request for good crops, abundant grass and hunt, and good climate. In this ceremony they are main characters the "machis" or priestesses who are the main conservatives of the ancestral mapuche tradition and cosmogony.

This ceremony can only be witnessed at distance by the white man, being exceptionally strange the invitation to participate of it, since it is, essentially, a ceremony of communion of the mapuches (the "people of the earth") with Mapu, the Mother Earth.
