Some history about El Maitén...


At the end of last century (approximately in 1890) the first population was made in the area, in those that the breeding of sheep livestock begins and, in smaller scale, bovine.  Foto: Cría de ganado ovino en El Maitén
El Galpón de Lobos - Arnaldo Muñoz In 1907 Mr. Abraham Breide builds the first trade of the place that is conserved. In 1920 is organized the first School and, in 1927, the first Post Office was built, in lands donated by Mr. Breide. The following year was built the building of the Police sation of the Territory of the Chubut, that is conserved today. Also settles in the area Mr. Isidoro Lobos whose trade with the time would become one of the strongest of the area. 
In the year 1939 arrive to the oriental riverbank of Chubut river the roads of the economic trail railroad (0,75m of among rails), the Old Patagonian Express or "La Trochita"

In May 25, 1945 are inaugurated in an official way the complete brunch that goes from Ingeniero Jacobacci to Esquel

Foto: Amanecer de invierno en El Maitén / Fuente: Anuario Estadístico de la Provincia del Chubut - 1998 On February 6, 1942 was created the "El Maitén" Squadron of "Gendarmería Nacional" (border guards), institution that acted in collaboration with Public Health, the Government of the Territory and Argentinean Rural Missions. 

In that same year of 1942, September 28 was formed the first Commission of Development, the one that in 1957 became Municipality

La cima del Cerro Azul en Invierno - Jorge El Khazen Meanwhile, in 1955 is formed the "El Maitén" Andean Club who puts one of the bases of the development of the region, like it is the touristic / sportive exploitation of the Blue Hill where, without hurry but without pause, goes being formed a Mountain Activities Center in the majestic mark of forests and snow. 
Little by little the town feels the necessity to create a high school. There was a first intent with "Florentino Ameghino"  High School,that was diluted at the little time, but whose seed was latent. September 11, 1966 open their doors the "Fray Luis Beltrán" Highscholl, clerk of Comodoro Rivadavia's Bishopric. Multiple the obstacles that it should face in their journey were for finally in 1987 to be traspassed to Chubut's Province Ministry of Education, becoming the current # 726 Secondary School "Padre Urbano Salort" that has done to change their physiognomy with the step of the years, being enlarged in 1995 and there being you concluded in these days new works of amplification of their building.

            In 1964 it becomes present the Bank of Chubut, indispensable institution to sustain the take off of a town with desires of growing.

November 30, 1993 a dark page registers in the history of our "Little Train " of narrow trail. It no longer beats their heart of coal and vapor. 

Their whistle has been silenced and the pits of El Maitén workplace were closed. The firing of employees and the regret are topic of this page.   
  
In the picture, the sad moment in that, for disposition of the National Government, La Trochita stays in workshops and it turns off the last locomotive.

Viaje Inaugural del Viejo Expreso Patagónico "La Trochita" - Arnaldo Muñoz But, not much more than one year, on February 1, 1995, under the provincial administration this alive museum is reactivated, denominated now "Old Patagonian Express - La Trochita", lending tourist services for rejoicing of the passengers from all over the world that visit us.  
  
Today, to the edge of the millennium and with their more than 50 years this small giant of 41 tons continues giving services, between Esquel and El Maitén.
